Fit Nation triathlete shares journey: ‘I couldn’t remember the last time I ran a mile’

You could consider Marisa Bank something of a triple threat. A Turner Studios sports production coordinator, photography enthusiast – and to complete the trifecta – a Fit Nation triathlete.

The South Carolina native was never someone you would label a sports junkie. She participated in a few sports growing up and a basketball rec league at the University of South Carolina, but that was pretty much the extent of her athletic prowess.

When she started her first job out of college at Turner in October 2016, she decided to join Fit Nation as not only a way to get involved at the company but also to stay active. Fit Nation is a program for WarnerMedia and Turner employees of all fitness abilities looking to achieve personal fitness goals through free or discounted training, events, and even nutritional guidance.

“For me, fitness is a really difficult thing to do on my own,” says Bank. “It’s something you really have to carve out time for, and it’s hard! Life gets busy, work gets busy, but you have to fit it in somewhere, even if it’s just step counting and being mindful of your routine.”

So, how did she make the jump from a semi-moderate fitness routine to triathlete? Well, it took some peer pressure… and a little case of #FOMO. Her friend had competed in one, and she didn’t want to miss out on the experience. Looking back now, she said she’s glad she took that leap of faith… but it wasn’t easy at first.

“My first triathlon was an incredible experience. I got way more out of it than I was expecting to,” Bank says. “But going into it, I couldn’t remember the last time I ran a mile.”

At first, she says the 12-week training program was intimidating. Not only was motivation a challenge, but she admits she was scared to go to her first few training classes, especially swimming, because she didn’t have much experience. But the Fit Nation coaching staff pushed her to keep going.

“I was definitely surprised that I was able to make myself get up for 6 a.m. training classes, but also that I was able to set a goal and complete it without giving up half way through.”

Her biggest surprise, though, came when she crossed the finish line.

“After preparing and training so hard, it felt great to finish. I ended up with a pretty solid time that I was happy with, but I hope to beat it next time!” she says.

Bank encourages other employees to get in on Turner’s free and discounted fitness opportunities, and who knows, you may end up surprising yourself by doing something you never dreamed was possible, just like her.

“I went in to it with almost zero fitness experience, and I came out with a wealth of knowledge and a little more confidence in myself,” she says. “If you want to challenge yourself and try something new and fun, just go for it!”
